Chapter 9

“Moo! You’re awake! I’m so happy to see you!” Favor dashed to Moo’s side and hopped on his bed, wrapped her arms around him, and planted kisses all over his face. She was so happy that she started to cry. “I thought I had lost you.”

“I’m sorry—”

“Stop it. Don’t be sorry—”

“I mean I’m sorry that I don’t recognize you. What is your name?” Moo had returned the embrace and welcomed the kisses but with a look of confusion over his face.

Favor pulled back from Moo and looked at him like he was crazy. She could see in his eyes that he was serious. He had no clue who she was. “It’s me, Favor. You don’t remember me?”

“At the moment I don’t remember anyone.” Moo looked at Favor trying hard to remember but he just couldn’t.

“You really have no idea who I am?” Favor was stunned and whispered to herself, “A bitch can’t catch a damn break.” Favor was heartbroken all over again. It was like having Moo behind unbreakable glass; she could see him but couldn’t touch him. His heart did not know Favor and couldn’t possibly love her at the moment.

“Maybe if you tell me a little bit about yourself. You said your name is Favor?”

“Fav, you call me Fav. Your Fav, as in your favorite. You’ve known me for thirteen years. Our love has to be stronger than some bitch ass amnesia!” Favor was angry; angry that she had the chance to talk to her love but for some reason the universe thought it would be funny to take his memory away. She was angry at life for treating her the way it did. It was like a tragic Shakespearean play. How was she supposed to deal with this issue? What if he never remembered her? Their love would be lost forever.

“Yes, my name is Favor Benjamin.” Favor sighed and touched Moo’s face as she talked to him. His face was blank as she spoke; Favor saw nothing in his eyes.

“I’m sorry. I just don’t remember. Are you my wife or girlfriend?”

“Not exactly, but that’s where we were headed. Our relationship was finally going to become reality.”

“So you’re not my wife or girlfriend but you love me?”

“You love me too Moo.” Favor could tell that she was going to get frustrated. It was like talking to a stranger.

“Moo must be my nickname? The nurses have been calling me Maurice.”

“Yes Moo is your nickname.”

“How long have we been ‘in love’?” Moo asked.

“Since the day we met.”

“Then why aren’t we married or something? We’re not even in a relationship but we have this great love? I don’t understand.”

“It’s a very long, very detailed story and I don’t have time to explain it to you right now. I’m sure your mom will be returning soon.”

“She was here this morning. She should be back any minute now.”

“You remember her?”

“No. She left to go get photo albums and things that she thought would jog my memory.”
